During a week in the Lake District some years ago, we came across this remarkable model village. What impressed me most was not simply its size, but the extraordinary attention to detail.
The tiny stone cottages had been built in the unmistakable style of the Lakes, complete with slate roofs, little windows, garden walls and brightly painted red doors. Every stone appeared to have been placed with the same care that would have gone into constructing a full-sized house.
Craftsmanship is not measured by size, but by the care put into every detail.
Somebody had invested an enormous amount of patience, imagination and pride in creating an entire community in miniature. Look at the photograph for a moment and it is easy to imagine that these are real Lakeland cottages viewed from a nearby hillside.
Years later, I may not remember everything we did during that holiday, but I still remember stopping to admire these little buildings.
Sometimes it is the unexpected discoveries—not necessarily the famous mountains or lakes—that remain with us longest.
